More mochi

Updated 28/3 - can get these rice cakes (pack of 4) from Taman Desa 100yen shop.

Decided to experiment more with mochi. Not that I really needed a reason for another treat!! Ha ha...

This time I decided to prepare it the ‘traditional japanese way’.

All nicely toasted and puffed up. Put under a hot grill for 5 min or so (depending how high the temperature is and also how ‘char’ (aka black you want it to be)).

But if you get too puffed (especially in the head or ego), see what happens…..

….yup, might end up in hot soup (literally – haha…ok I just made that up). In this case, a lovely sweet bowl of red bean soup boiled with a hint of dried mandarin skin. Very nice indeed. The lightly toasted plain and soft gooey mochi goes very well with this sweet dessert!

Another way to enjoy mochi is to toast it but this time brushed with a little soya sauce. Gives a nice fragrance and taste. If you prefer more puffed and crunchy, toast it both sides.

Even my dad was giving a forlorn look, hoping for a taste. Sorry-la, when you full recover first ok. For now, plain and clear food may not be the tastiest but is the best for you. After all we want you get well SOON.

Peony - Hi, tks for your suggestion. I just noticed this in another japanese mother's website - she used toasted mochi in lieu of croutons. Nice idea esp. if u r a mochi lover.

Emily, I'm a terrible daughter aren't I? he he he...Truth be told I'm not much of a red bean tongsui person though I am surrounded by hard core fans. But this combination is acceptable in my books, more for the mochi than anything else of course - yum!
