Mentawai Islands are a chain of about seventy islands off the westerncoast of Sumatra, Indonesia so explains wikepedia.
Not a surfer personally but was intrigue about this place and rather than tucking it away thought I'd share it as it came HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by surf enthusiasts - one of the top surfing places in the world I am told.
Really??? In Indonesia! They have good waves for surfing?? ....what's the name of the place again?? *that was my exact reaction*
Frankly, because I couldn't believe that there could be great surfing waves at Indonesia, did some digging for the praised wave surfing islands. Must say the islands do look beautiful....and yes, they DO HAVE great surfing waves!
Wondering how then did I find out about this place?? During our flight back, there were a couple of typical Aussie blokes (6 to be exact) who sat next to us. They were boisterous - probably just super excited about their trip and the impending waves; the alcohol they were tucking back probably heightened their jovial mood and their tongues too!
If you are a keen SURFER, you'd probably know/heard about this top secret place already!!
